This week we give our attention to the crossing of the sea and destruction of Pharaoh's army. The deliverance of God's people and the destruction of his enemies are two sides of the one event. This is seen clearly in the events of the exodus, but even more powerfully in the exodus which Christ accomplishes through the cross, where the prince of this world is cast out. God's presence leads, protects and also chastens Israel, who are shown to be stubborn of heart and chronically ungrateful. However, they are brought out as his saved community, and their future hope is bound up with God's character rather than their worthiness. Our redemption in Christ is nothing less than a new creation by his grace.
