The Passover was to become a perpetual memorial in Israel, teaching them about the nature of God's relationship to them, as well as prophetically prefiguring the coming of Messiah. When Jesus met with the disciples to observe the Passover meal on the night of his betrayal, he transformed the event, since the fulfilment of its prophetic meaning was now present in his own person and work.
