Dearly beloved congregation of our Lord Jesus Christ, the passage before us this morning is one of those mountaintop moments of which Hebrews is so full. The author utters a glorious phrase or two that so clearly summarize his point and leave you, the reader, nearly breathless with the weight of glory. In these two verses, the writer describes what the old covenant ritual was and what it did, and compares it directly to the blood of Christ and what that did. As we will see, as effective as the blood of bulls and goats was at cleansing the flesh, the blood of Christ is effective not just for the flesh but also for the conscience.
