Although Ahab and Jezebel have gone off the scene in Israel's history, their corrupting influence was still being felt.
God's promises to eradicate Baal worship and carry out judgment on the family of Ahab were carried out through Jehu. He had been chosen by God as the next king over the northern kingdom. A man not hesitant to act with forcefulness that was at times brutal, he made sure their would be no rivals as he assumed the throne. He slaughered all Ahab's sons and followed through with zeal in carrying out God's judgment on the whole house of Ahab. He would prove to be zealous as an instrument used by God - but he failed to be as passionate in pursuing godliness.
Jehu also got rid of Baal worship in the kingdom which had been introduced by Jezebel. He cunningly assembled all the Baal worshipers, had them killed, and then destroyed the whole worship center itself. However he did not forsake other idolatrous worship as worship of the golden calves continued at Dan and Bethel.
He was rewarded by the Lord for what he did do right in his zeal, but condemned by God for failing to pursue godliness and obedience. As a consequence the kingdom shrinks.
In chapter eleven the focus shifts to the southern kingdom where the reign of the only woman to sit on the throne and rule over either kingdom is recorded. Again the sovereignty of God is displayed as He positions people to carry out His plans and purposes.
Observations from this study include: 1. God's word will always be accomplished. 2. Zeal for the Lord means zeal against false worship. 3. We must not be selective in our hatred of sin. 4. Compromises always have consequences.
