Both kings of the northern (Israel) and southern (Judah) kingdoms have been brought together at Ramoth Gilead. Elisha sends one of the 'sons of the prophets' there to anoint Jehu to be king over Israel. The message to him is his assignment to 'strike the house of Ahab' to the extent his 'whole house' is to perish. Time for judgment has come on the house of Ahab just as God has said it would, down to the very details of Jezebel being eaten by dogs. By marriage to Ahab's daughter and the subsequent sinful, godless influence of Ahab's family, Ahaziah king of Judah has brought judgment upon himself, dying at Meggido.
The prophecy concerning Jezebel is brought to pass with the most gruesome and graphic details preserved in the biblical record.
Sadly, even witnessing and being an instrument in bringing about God's judgment, Jehu will end up being a godless man.
From this chapter we learn that vindication is God's and He will repay. We see this as His word is fulfilled in His time. A reminder too that when divine judgment comes, no sin goes unpaid.
