This is Easter Sunday, which is the day in the Christian calendar that we celebrate the bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. Although the death of Jesus is the necessary substitutionary atonement by which the wrath of God is propitiated, the bodily resurrection is Almighty God’s validation that a satisfactory payment was made. That is the reason why the resurrection of Jesus is the chief doctrine of the Christian faith. However, rather than doing a sermon just on the fact of the resurrection, I have chosen to develop the implications of the resurrection from the story of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus. These two disciples were sorely vexed, because as far as they knew Jesus was actually dead, and buried. Consequently, their hopes were thoroughly dashed. And there was only one thing that would alleviate their vexation – if Jesus were really alive! That was the solution to their problem, and that is the solution to our problems as well. Since Jesus is alive, we have a living Savior that we can turn to in our times of vexation and trouble. May the Lord be pleased to bless His word to our hearts.
