This is Palm Sunday, which is the day in the Christian calendar that we celebrate the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. This was an important event in the life and ministry of Jesus because it marks the beginning of His Passion Week. In other words, this day was the “beginning of the end” of our Lord’s last few days in this world. I have chosen to develop this event from Matthew’s Gospel, and I will do so by simply expounding the details of the text. Since the historical setting is so important, I spend some time explaining precisely what was going on as Jesus slowly made His way toward Jerusalem. From there I open up what Matthew describes as the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy, for this is what the crowds recognized to be taking place. They knew that this was the long-awaited Messianic King, and they didn’t hesitate to make it known with shouts of praise. I then conclude with an exhortation that we must not follow the pattern prevalent in the days of Jesus, when most people missed the Messiah, even though He was in their very midst. May the Lord be pleased to bless His word to our hearts on this great day.
