Throughout America's history, Christians have had it relatively easy with respect to the governing authorities. It has only been in recent years that we have seen an increasing hostility toward the faith in such a manner as to involve interference with the church in her beliefs and practices and worship. In the current days, governing authorities are commanding churches to stay at home. Some are just strongly recommending it. What is the church to do? Should we obey the magistrate or keep meeting in obedience to God? It is long past time for the church to think through these matters. It is no longer a theoretical matter. It is very practical. It is now upon us. In this series on church and state, the first sermon addresses the responsibility of Christians to submit to the magistrate in every way possible -- so long as doing so does not mean disobedience to the Higher Authority (God Himself). Today we look at the rule -- which is obedience. Next week, we will begin to look at the exception to the rule -- which is civil disobedience.
