Theme: Believers must strive to be rich toward God and guard against covetousness. In v. 13-14, a man approaches Jesus with a greedy request. Jesus does not do what the man wants, but instead in v. 15, He uses the man's greedy request to warn the people against covetousness. We also need to guard ourselves against covetousness and place "guardrails" in our lives to protect ourselves from becoming greedy. Jesus further explains that life does not consist in the abundance of a person's possessions. In vv. 16-21, Jesus gives the parable of the rich fool. This man was only concerned with self-indulgence. In application, we can learn the importance of being balanced in our finances. It is not wrong to prepare for the future, but we must put proper priorities on our possessions. We need to invest wisely by laying up treasure in Heaven. We need to have godliness with contentment. We need to seek to live modestly without excess as James warns in James 5:1-3, and we need to seek to use our money for Kingdom work. Are you seeking to be rich toward God, or are your priorities toward laying up treasures for yourself? Will you simply ask the Lord to help you assess your situation, to be wiling to change what you may need to, and to live joyfully content with God?
