Paul is concluding this letter with a few more answers to questions the Corinthians had apparently raised. One concerned the matter of the collection for the poor in the church at Jerusalem. That 'mother' church, comprised primarily of Jews, was being heavily persecuted as those believers were opposed by both their fellow Jews who were not believers in Christ as well as the Gentiles. This congregation had become an example of a church standing firm and bearing their witness for Christ in the face of great pressure and persecution.
Paul's concern was not only to alleviate some of the pressure from their poverty, but also to solidify the unity of Jews and Gentiles in the Church. It was important for the Gentiles to recognize and appreciate God's plan for, and work through the Jews.
Principles for giving are drawn by incorporating instructions he later gave in the letter of Second Corinthians. A study of key words he used sets the context and nature of giving that is pleasing to the Lord. We also find in Paul's instructions the pattern for our giving - for 'each one' to give according to how God has prospered - liberally. Giving is to be carefully considered and planned for as priority for the use of God's provision.
