There is a great disconnect between what Jesus is saying and what the people are wanting. They want free bread. He wants to give them the bread of life! The crowds are earth bound in their thinking and in their appetite. Their hearts are set on that which is temporal and soon perishes. Jesus is speaking of the food that endures to eternal life. When He speaks of them eating His flesh and drinking His blood they are offended. Their minds cannot see beyond that which is merely physical. Whether it be the manna that Israel was fed in the wilderness or the bread that Jesus fed the crowd with by the lake, both miracles were signs, but signs only of the true Bread of God given from heaven – the flesh of the Son of God given for the life of the world. Without this death there is no life for the world!
