When we want God to dance to the discordant tune of our own hearts we do not know Him. His own people did not recognize His presence when He came among them. Only He knew who He was and where He had come from. His time was not their time. His way was not their way. He did not take His cue from those around Him, not even His brothers. He had been sent to glorify His Father and redeem the world. There would be no short cuts to true glory. It would take the hour of the cross to open the floodgates of heaven upon the dreary wastelands of our parched humanity. Jerusalem and its leaders epitomize the religious who outwardly celebrate God’s goodness but in reality their hearts are hard and dry. The One who they rejected became the very source of the outpouring of the Spirit that their celebrations anticipated. He was maligned, misunderstood and misrepresented but He was never deflected from His mission. Neither did He close His heart to those who would not believe but called all who were thirsty to come. Do we really believe that from Him such a River of Life flows?
