This week, in John 5:19-47 we hear Jesus himself speak of the relationship he has with the Father - a relationship established in love and expressed in their oneness in all things. Whatever the Father does, the Son does likewise. This includes giving life, raising the dead, and all judgment. The Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. Jesus, the Son, can do nothing on his own. And everything he does is just and true because he seeks not his own will, but the will of his Father. This is by no means a limitation or weakness on Jesus' behalf. It is in fact his greatest strength and glory - that he seeks the glory of God. For us on the other hand, chasing the glory of man prevents faith and engenders unbelief, which leads to judgment. The alternative is to hear the voice of the Son and to believe in him. Those who do so do not come into judgment but have passed from death to life. This is goal of the love shared between the Father and the Son, to the praise of the glory of God.
