Stephen's enemies thought they were the defenders of true religion. They accused him of sharing Jesus' 'crime' of attacking the Word and Temple of God. Theirs was a territorial and legalistic religion. Stephen proved from Scripture that they had distorted God's revelation, that it was not intended to be confined to one location or depend on human obedience. They were in denial and could not bear to hear the truth. As they destroyed his life on earth Jesus rose to welcome him. God's gospel continued through the very person (Saul) who was approving of his death.
