Philip took the gospel to Samaria. It was a radical step, for Jews and Samaritans were age-old enemies. But he acted in obedience to Christ's word (Acts 1:8). That is the right approach to all gospel work. Christ assured the Samaritans that Philip's message was indeed for them by doing spectacular works of the Spirit among them. He then assured the apostles Peter and John that the Samaritans' faith was genuine by showing them the Spirit's work just as he had done at Pentecost. (Note the similar events at Cornelius' conversion and the development of a Gentile church in Antioch). Simon was impressed by the spectacle and the power the apostles had, but he was not humble, penitent, or grateful on account of the gospel. The apostles warned him of God's judgement. We should beware of movements that emphasise the spectacular rather than faith and repentance. The Ethiopian eunuch was as humble as Simon was proud. He accepted the authority of Scripture, believed in Jesus, and went away rejoicing. Christ's church had taken the gospel "to Samaria and the ends of the earth". Christ will work where his people have planted his Word.
