Last week we began our study of Jesus’ temptation and learned that: - We don’t merely need fighting lessons, we need a Fighter. - We don’t merely need a moral example, we need a Deliverer. - When Jesus did battle with the devil in the wilderness He fought and won on our behalf. - Where Adam and Israel had failed, Jesus proved Himself to be the true Son of God. - What Adam lost Jesus has come to regain.
While the most important aspect of this passage is what Jesus did as our champion, we also can learn much to equip us for our battle with temptation. How can we hope to do better than Adam or Israel? Because of what Christ has done for us we are no longer slaves to sin and we are confident that God will not allow us to be tempted beyond what we are able. We, like Jesus, are equipped by the Spirit and the Word to battle the devil.
