Most people think of Jesus overcoming the devil’s temptations in the wilderness as an example for us to follow. It is. And I plan to preach about what we can learn from this passage about fighting temptation next week.
But something bigger and more important is going on here. The temptations Jesus faces are unique to Him as the Son of God. I can’t turn stones into bread. Nor will I be offered the glory of earthly kingdoms. Jesus appears as our Champion, the true Son of God who overcomes the devil where others (Adam and Israel) have failed. After He emerges victorious He is able to begin His public ministry which will lead to the final defeat of Satan, sin and death. Because He has won the victory we are set free and can overcome the devil and his temptations.
