This week we begin our study of Jesus’ public ministry. Luke’s record of our Lord’s work in Galilee extends from 4:14-9:50. After a brief summary of Jesus’ teaching in the synagogues (4:14-15), Luke describes Jesus’ return to His hometown of Nazareth where He reads from Isaiah 61 and makes an astonishing claim that He is the One Who is anointed by the Spirit to preach the gospel announcing deliverance to the poor and oppressed. The long awaited time of God’s favor (Jubilee) has arrived (4:16-21). Next week we will study the response Jesus’ message receives in Nazareth (4:22-30).
Many have misunderstood Jesus’ message of setting free the oppressed as merely promoting immediate social reform. We will see that the salvation Jesus brings is spiritual. The miracles He performs are signs which point to Him as the one who delivers us from bondage to Satan, sin and death. When He returns all poverty, disease and oppression will be eliminated for those who have received Him. But the time of opportunity will be over for those who reject him. They will incur His wrath.
