There is more detail devoted to the life of Samson than any other figure in the book of Judges. And yet Samson in many ways was the least effective of all the judges of Israel. Samson never quite meets expectations. He only begins to deliver the people from the oppression of the Philistines. Though his acts bring much destruction they do not bring much deliverance. So the question must asked… Why does God devote so much attention to the seemingly ineffective life of Samson?
God planned for Israel to be wholly dedicated unto him. He miraculously brought them forth as a people and cared for them nurturing them and teaching them his ways. When they submitted to him he granted them miraculous power over their enemies and blessed them with victory. When the forgot him and rested in their own strength and pursued their own way they fell into bondage and became a mockery to God. God would have used the nation of Israel as the people through whom a gospel reign of blessing would flow upon all people but instead like Samson they only begin this work. Now it has come to the church and to the Christian. We are to carry out their consecrated purpose to proclaim and live for God and to bring His truth before others.
The reason so much is written of Samson is that his life reveals the sad path of Israel and warns us from following the same path.
