Corporate worship is meant to honour God as we praise him in song, prayer, communion, giving, fellowship, and by the preaching of his eternal word (Ephesians 5:19; Acts 2:42). As simple as it may seem, because of its iteracy, our weekly church services are always in danger of becoming perfunctory. Thomas Brooks said, “The little wedge knocked in makes way for the greater,” and the ‘little wedge’ which begins us down the road to hollow lip-serving worship is the distracting thought. In this sermon, delivered at the Morning Exercises of Pinner’s Hall in 1672, Thomas Manton unmasks the true nature of this monstrous sin, then enumerates its causes and cures.
