Thomas Boston was a Scottish Puritan who ministered to a small congregation at Simprin. What follows is an extract from his magnificent work Human Nature in its Fourfold State, which is an expansion on Augustine’s four states of man in relation to sin: innocence, sin, grace, and glory. From this reading we learn that when a man concludes he is utterly and hopelessly lost of his own account, he begins to look outside himself for a source of salvation. “For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.” Romans 5:6 “No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.” John 6:44
