It has become something of a common insult on the interwebs to announce to someone that he does not know what time it is. The insult is saying "You don't understand the context of our times. You don't understand the historical forces at work; you don't see what changes are even now being birthed from the womb of the future." Well, our author this morning invokes a similar trope. But rather than using time as a way to refer to the broader context of his audience, he uses place. Specifically, he contrasts two places, two mountains — Sinai and Zion. But the point is the same as the "do you know what time it is?" question. "Do you know where you are? Christian, do you realize that you live on Mt Zion, not on Mt Sinai?" You must recognize your context and behave accordingly. Since you are on Zion, don't go back to Sinai! The Levitical system in all its terrifying splendor is dead and buried in Christ's tomb. The new and better way into God's presence is the way you need to walk. This good is yours whenever you enter the church, and will remain with you so long as you remain with the church, which is the gathering of God's people on Zion the beautiful. Stay there.
