While His popularity in Israel was growing and had peaked, His opposition was growing and the hostility toward Him would continue to increase all the way to the cross. We can see the resentment and hatred of the Pharisees and scribes as Jesus x-rayed their hearts in the discussion over unwashed hands. Jesus spoke to them about the defilement of the heart. The religious elite did not like Jesus and the conflict would continue as He grew closer to the cross. Today, we pick up in Mark and we find Jesus going into a Gentile region for some privacy. This was not intended to be a preaching tour, but Jesus did desire to get out of the public for a while, perhaps, for the purpose of teaching and training His disciples in preparation for the growing hostility and crucifixion. However, while in Tyre, a woman, an outcast of outcasts, approaches Him and is hungering for a miracle. She does not asked to be sat at the Master’s table in order to enjoy the feast. She does not feel worthy to sit at such a place of honor. She recognizes that she is an outcast Gentile, but she grows in her faith and requests just a few crumbs from the Master’s table. A crumb is a small fragment especially of something baked. All she is asking for is a blessing from the LORD. She had a daughter who had an unclean spirit, and she came begging for mercy.
