Jesus is about to come into conflict with the Pharisees and scribes over the issue of hand washing which is more about ceremonial cleansing. The Pharisees and scribes have developed man-made rules which are required to be followed in order to be clean. Now, hand washing is very important for our physical health, but it does not make us spiritually clean. How many times have you heard someone say, “I need to clean myself up a little before I come to God?” This statement might mean for some that I need to quit cussing, quit drinking, or quit lusting before I come to God. It denotes the idea that man can change his behavior’s enough to be somewhat suitable to God. The problem is these behaviors are the symptoms of a greater problem which lies within the heart. God is concerned about our hearts. This morning the title will be “A Clean Heart.” Do you want to get clean? Let us consider 1)Following Rules Does Not Make the Heart Clean (1-4) 2) Following Rules Does Not Lead to True Worship (5-8) 3) Following Rules Can Be Twisted to Satisfy My Heart’s Desires 4) The Gospel Has the Only Prescription for a Clean Heart (14-23).
