The question, "Who is the greatest?" is familiar. Jesus' disciples might have thought of Abraham, Moses, or Elijah; or they might have thought of God rewarding his servants. In reality they were just showing personal ambition. If they continued to expect greatness they would be devastated when Jesus was crucified; and they would not be equipped to follow him. So Jesus took a child and said they could not even enter God's kingdom unless they humbled themselves like that child. It sounded like his conversation with Nicodemus. Our whole attitude must change, and we must humble ourselves both for ourselves and in view of God's amazing grace. If humility is the road to greatness then greatness is not what we think it is - celebrity, influence, etc. We should know this anyway, for we value and admire Jesus not for standing on his dignity but because he humbled himself to the death of the cross for our sake. Should we even think in terms of 'greatness'? What God most values is is own image in his Son - "in whom I am well pleased". And what Jesus values is his own image in his people. That involves the fellowship of his suffering as well as the fellowship of his resurrection. He illustrates it in washing his disciples' feet; he shows it in Gethsemane. Two important implications are recorded for us by the Spirit. Jesus spoke of the man who was not with his disciples yet cast out demons in his name - if we can charitably believe someone is a follower of Jesus we are to receive him. That shows how precious the least disciple is to the Master. Another thing that shows this is the way Jesus regards the sin of leading a brother into sin.
