"Does your Teacher not pay Temple Tax?" There was more in his question than he realised. The tax was symbolic of subjection to God's Law and to the Roman enemy. Was Jesus slave or free? victim or liberator? Jesus' question to Simon portrayed him as the Son of God, therefore not under obligation to pay for the upkeep of what he called "my Father's house". But there is a second issue - how should freedom be used? And Jesus chose to forego his rights so that his ministry would not be undermined. He even provided for his disciple to pay the tax even though, united to Christ, he should not have had to pay it. Freedom is at the heart of the Christian life ("if the Son makes you free ..."; Galatians 5:1; 2 Corinthians 3:17; etc). The Jews recognised it as freedom from the Ceremonial Law of Moses; but it is important for all Christians. Believers in Christ should rejoice in their freedom! It relates to self, Satan, the world, and the troubles of life. It should lead to freedom of spirit - the spirit of adoption. But we must use our freedom wisely, just as Jesus did. The welfare of others should take priority over our rights. Paul's teaching on food offered to idols is a case study (1 Corinthians 8). Peter calls us to use our freedom "not as a cover-up for evil but serving God (see also Galatians 5:13). Serving God in love means keeping his commands (parental authority). Serving one another involves promoting their interests. "Even Christ did not please himself." We need not fear, for Christ will provide for us and our service. The child of God is free from guilt, can approach their Father, overcomes sin, and does good through the resource Christ gives.
