The pattern of life reveals the master being served. That so being, the apostle Paul wrote contrasting the life lived with the Holy Spirit as master with that of the flesh or old self that was governed by sin. Serving sin will always prove destructive as the mind is set on satisfying corrupt desires as well as satisfying natural desires in corrupt ways. It will prove to be a death walk from beginning to end, from bad to worse. The Spirit of God, and only the Spirit of God, provides the power to be freed from the tyranny of sin to live a new life serving righteousness. This life is lived as the believer learns and lives out the Word of God with the Spirit of God giving understanding and insight into its application. This life is lived with the mind set on doing the will of God as the Spirit leads and denying the world, the flesh, and the devil which will continue with efforts to draw the former slave back into sinful conformity. The believer can and must make an ongoing and continual effort and choices to please God and pursue righteousness.
