Jesus did not allow his disciples to stay with him on the Mount of Transfiguration. His kingdom is not yet complete; we are not ready for it; and we must be like him in his humiliation. The mountain experience prepares us for the valley. God's presence contrasted with demonic possession; harmony with strife; and holiness with evil. Jesus came to the defence of his disciples who had been challenged by the Scribes. His criticism of the people's unbelief was strong - 'how long shall I put up with you!' He began a conversation with the father of the demon-possessed boy - he needed Jesus as much as the boy did. It should have produced a prayer of faith; instead the father expressed near despair - 'If you can do anything, help us.' All things are possible to him who believes because all things are possible to Christ. His word of command provoked a last attempt on the demon's part. That often happens when the Spirit begins to work in a human soul - temptations and sins appear that were never there before. But Satan at his worst is no match for Christ. He 'Lifted him up.' The disciples asked why they had been unable to cure the boy? Jesus pointed to weakness in their faith - he alone could cure and prayer was needed. That raises two questions: what can we expect of Jesus? and, How should we deal with our unbelief? We can ask him to do what he is in the habit of doing, and what he has promised generally. But when had gives an unconditional promise (e.g. 'I will never leave you', we are absolutely certain. We should bring our unbelief to Christ confessing it as sin; ask for the Spirit's help; and focus on Christ not on ourselves.
