The importance of Isaac in the plan of God can never be understated. Without him, the plan never gets underway! A fact, we see over and over in the lineage of our Messiah. Isaac was positionally the "yachid"--the only one--but functionally he struggled living out his God-ordained spiritually. Nevertheless, his dysfunctional spirituality did not negate his positional spirituality. Also, his physical blessings were not as a result of his manifested earthly walk. Hence, the reason the author says, "Isaac was a man of the field." Jesus said, "The field is the world." Hence, Isaac was a man of the world. Notwithstanding, even though the lessons learned from Isaac are numerous, high on the list is God's sovereignty. The sovereign choices of God are His alone and not wages earned in our relationship with God.
