MATTHEW 3 Summary: Here we read of John the Baptist preparing the way for Christ, by His preaching and way of life, and the prophecy fulfilled in him (1-4). Many people come to hear him and are baptized (5-6). John rebukes the religious leaders boldly (7-10). He testifies about Christ coming after him (11-12). Then Jesus comes and is baptized, and the Holy Spirit descends on Him, and God the Father, speaks from heaven, and announces that Jesus is His beloved Son (13-17).
Devotional: (1) What does it mean to repent? (2) Do you sorrow over your sins, and turn away from doing/thinking them, by turning and following Jesus Christ? (3) Who are some of the people who faithfully speak to you about your soul and encourage you in following Christ? Pause and give thanks for them. (4) Do you see how humble Jesus Christ is, that even though he did not sin, yet was willing to take part in the baptism like others? (5) Can you identify the three persons of the Godhead (Trinity) in vv.13-17? (6) Are you humbly following God's Word, however hard it may be? Would you pray and ask God to help you in it?
