There are a number of great, doctrinal truths in this chapter; the deity of the Lord Jesus, the sovereignty of God in salvation, and conversion by means of the gospel. These doctrines that I would call stand alone doctrines; it isn't necessary to know the context to get the doctrine. But there is a reason why Paul brings in the doctrine of gospel conversion. Very likely there are some within the Corinthian church to whom the gospel is still hidden, and whose minds are yet blinded by the god of this world.
