Gaining Christ is more narrowly described in terms of our union with Christ, in whom we have all our spiritual blessings. Paul explains that he now counted all to be lost so that he would have an credited or imputed righteousness before God from God on the basis of Christ's life and death in his place. He no longer thought that his own supposedly achieved righteousness meant anything before God.
