Theme: Believers must be aware the love of money is an abomination to the Lord. In v. 16, we see that the Pharisees didn't believe the truth of the kingdom of God. Jesus teaches the importance of striving to enter the Kingdom of God, not by works, but to truly repent and believe the truth of the gospel. It takes Divine Sovereignty to do this. As He taught earlier, though many will seek to enter the Kingdom, the way is narrow. We need to encourage ourselves to continue to persevere in the faith. In v. 17, Jesus exhorts the Pharisees that though they think the law is diminished, every letter of the law will be fulfilled. We can expect God to fulfill all His Word. In v. 18, Jesus condemns the Pharisees for twisting of the Word of God and reveals that in their hearts they did not truly love God. We need to beware of treating God's Word casually. What Jesus wanted them to realize was simple. Love God with all your heart, know His law, and follow it. Jesus is very clear, you cannot serve God and money. Be like the man who finds the pearl of great price and goes and sells all he has to buy it. There is no greater treasure than knowing and loving Jesus!
