Theme: Eternal destination is based on allegiance to Christ, through faith and repentance, not in serving self through money.
In vv. 19-21, Jesus describes through this parable the earthly lives and afterlives of two men, the rich man and Lazarus. The contrast is great between the rich man, living his best life now, in fine attire, and eating a feast, and the poor man suffering from sores, with no food, and no one to care for him. However, upon dying, the rich man is in hell, and Lazarus is with Abraham. In application, we see that material blessings don't indicate spiritual standing. We need to make sure of our eternal destination. The rich man trusted in his heritage, his money, his comforts, his supposed blessings, and he was badly mistaken. Our eternal destination is based on allegiance to Christ, through faith and repentance, not in serving self through money. |
