Theme: The Lord Almighty gave Abram an outward sign of the covenant, and today through Christ, we have an inward sign of the new covenant.
In this passage, there are essentially five major speeches given by the Lord to Abram. In speech one, God establishes His covenant with Abram. In speech two, He changes Abram's name to Abraham and promises that kings and nations will come from him. In speech three, God commands Abraham and every male in his household to take the sign of the covenant, which was circumcision. In speech four, God changes Sarai's name to Sarah and confirms that the promise of nations and kings will come by a son born to her. In speech five, God establishes His covenant. As we reflect on these speeches, we learn that we should rest in the Lord's faithfulness to His covenant, look to our promised eternal inheritance, and realize God's internal sign of the covenant is a circumcised heart. God is looking for people who follow Him from the heart.
