I. Circumcision and Uncircumcision What did circumcision signify to Jews? In the covenant with Abraham, there was a two-fold aspect. It was dichotomous covenant. On the one side, there was a conditional covenant with the physical seed of Abraham. On the other side, there was an unconditional covenant with the spiritual seed of Abraham. Great problems have resulted when people fail to see the distinction. Children of Abraham by the flesh tend to trust in being the fleshly descendants of Abraham and claiming promises to which they have no right. Isaac was the spiritual seed. Ishmael was physical seed only. Jacob was spiritual seed. Esau physical seed only.
II. What it once meant to be a Gentile By and large, with only a few exceptions, from the days of Abraham onward, Gentiles were ... *Separate from Christ *Excluded from the commonwealth of Israel and all the spiritual benefits God had bestowed there. *Strangers of the covenants of promise *Having no hope and without God in the world
III. We need to remember our pathetic past *We are Gentiles in the flesh; once upon a time we were without hope; prior to salvation, we were as dead and darkened as everyone else. *We must remember this, or we will be arrogant about our spiritual progress and we will thank ourselves instead of God, who has made us to differ.
