In giving her description of her Beloved to the Daughters of Jerusalem, the Shulamite Bride has described Christ's complexion, His head and His hair, and His eyes. Now she comes to His cheeks and His lips. Each of these features has spiritual meaning for the believer in relation to what Christ is to them, and what Christ has done for them. When you think of the cheeks and the lips of the one that you love, if you are married to them, you think of their loveliness, their beauty, and their desirability as your spouse. This is the person whom God has made for you, and given to you to be your companion and your lover in the bonds of holy matrimony. You think of what it means to be near them, and to show your loving affection to them. Now, in spiritual terms, think of what Jesus your spiritual husband means to you. Jesus is your close spiritual companion and the spiritual lover of your soul. In regard to the cheeks and lips of Christ we want to open up the truth, this afternoon, of Christ's affection for us His Bride. It is what our Bridegroom has shown forth in His cheeks and spoken with His lips, during culmination of His earthly ministry, that has secured your affection for Him as a part of His Bride, the Church. So this afternoon we want to look 1st at how Christ's suffering cheeks and suffering lips have drawn out our affections to Him. And 2ndly – We want to look at Christ's triumphant cheeks and triumphant lips which communicate grace to us who believe, even now.
