What is the basis for the thinking and intentions of those involved in the 'emerging' way of doing church? Tradition, experience and Scripture are considered to give equal footing in terms of being foundational and authoritative for the church. The trend is to move away from bible teaching and preaching to conversations by candlelight creating a mystical atmosphere for worship. This is being done by referencing and re-introducing many of the religious practices from the Middle Ages and the mystics of the Roman Catholic church.
Of great concern is the adoption of these methods and practices by some who consider themselves evangelical, thusly becoming the open door for Satan to corrupt the church from within.
His relentless attack on the Word of God, the character of God and the people of God will go on, and as always His deceptiveness is very effective. He doesn't have to come up with anything original - but simply creates a counterfeit of the original that gives an appearance of the truth while being corrupted with whatever will be appealing to man's fallen human nature. Because Satan recycles his strategies to tear apart the church of God - the warnings in Scripture again prove timeless. The apostle Paul's warnings to the church at Colossae concerning legalism, mysticism and asceticism must be carefully heeded by believers today.
