In this chapter Isaiah explains something he said in the previous chapter. God had declared that “He was angry with His people,” and now He is going to give the reasons why. His displeasure with them resulted in His eventual judgment against them. We know, of course, that He used the wicked Babylonian Empire to accomplish His work of judgment against His people. But then God reveals something that may surprise us when He said to Judah, “Oh that you had paid attention to my commandments.” Here God is expressing His regret that judgment against His people became necessary. He would have preferred mercy, which He did patiently express to them for many years. But since the Lord's people scored that mercy, God's judgment became an eventual necessity, and then a certain reality. These are the themes I develop in this chapter, trying repeatedly to show how relevant they are for Christians in this modern era. The point is this: learning from Judah's failure, we must give diligent attention to listen to what the Lord is saying. We must not turn a deaf ear to Him, or else we too will pay the ultimate price.
