Remember that Isaiah is addressing the people of God as he anticipates their future exile in Babylon. Having warned them about the absolute absurdity of idolatry, and having reminded them that Jehovah is the only God in existence, he now turns their attention to the eventual judgment of God upon Babylon. Indeed, the nation that God used to do His will by bringing judgment upon His people will now be judged for their crimes against God's people. I introduce the sermon by emphasizing that immutable spiritual principle. Following that I develop the theme of God's judgment under the three headings of the announcement of judgment; the reason for judgment; the description of judgment. The text is crystal clear about the matter, and the principles therein reveal the general biblical pattern. I conclude the sermon by defending the biblical doctrine of the vengeance of God. But this is so relevant for our modern world that I then work out what the Bible reveals about the yet future fall of present day Babylon. Therefore, the fall of ancient Babylon is but a picture of God's eventual worldwide judgment at the end of the age.
