In this chapter we come to the second of the four “servant songs” in Isaiah. These are poetic utterances in which Isaiah reveals something about the identity, life, and ministry of the Servant of the Lord. We know that this Servant is none other than God incarnate – the Lord Jesus Christ. In this song we have a slight difference from the others, for the Servant Himself does the speaking. In doing so, He makes several emphatic assertions about Himself, all of which give us a glimpse into His character and mission in this world. I develop His thought point by point, trying to weave in the application as I go. But perhaps the last point is most essential of all, for here the Servant declares His faithfulness to the redemptive will of Jehovah. Why is that so important? Because the salvation of His people hangs in the balance! It is because of His great faithfulness that He was able to accomplish their eternal salvation. Therefore, we must realize that the Servant of the Lord is the only Savior of sinners, and that no sinner can be saved apart from trusting in Him alone. May the Lord be pleased to bless the preaching of His word!
