Peter brings the sufferings of Christ to bear on the sufferings of the saints. He reminds us of the single occasion he has in mind, as Christ suffered once. He draws attention to the definite atonement accomplished, as Christ suffered for sin. He points to the saving substitution involved, as the Righteous One suffers in the place of the unrighteous many. And, he identifies the gracious purpose: that in so suffering, the Christ might bring his people to God.
