"John, writing to the church under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit makes it clear that the true Christian who has been born of God does not continue to live in willful unrepentant sin. Verse 9 says, 'No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God's seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God.' When we are converted–when the Holy Spirit does that regenerating work in our dead hearts and makes us alive in Christ–a new principle, a new seed to use John's terminology of life is planted within us that yearns for righteousness. That longs to be like Christ. It is that principle or seed within us that puts us at war with remaining sin and convicts and leads us to repentance when we do sin. That seed is the Holy Spirit working through His word implanted in us at our conversion. So James 1:21 says, 'Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.'"
