John is so clear here. I imagine his preaching had very little nuance or ambiguity, and here he is saying that it is impossible to believe that you are a true Christian if you don't love other Christians. But let's bring this home to us. There are two things that bewilder me today in the church: The first is there are so many professing believers who have virtually no interest in connecting with their family in Christ in the local church. But friends how can we really be a Christian, in the true biblical sense, apart from the church? The second thing that bothers me is how quick believers are to separate from other believers over silly stuff. Folks church hop these days at the drop of a hat. They quit Sunday School because the teacher said something they didn't like. They stop giving out of protest to some change in the church. Friends may God keep us from this kind of silliness that would cause the Apostle John to question the salvation of any professing Christian who acts likes that.
