"I want you to notice something important about the nature of personal saving faith here in this verse. John is not calling us to put our faith in a doctrine but in a Person. To put it another way, you can know Christ intellectually, but not know Christ personally. Friends there will be many people in hell who knew Christ intellectually. They know the doctrine, but their knowledge never made its way from their head to their heart, and they are eternally lost because of it. And I'm not in any way trying to diminish the importance of knowing right doctrine because by now you should know that I'm very serious about doctrine, but friends true doctrine doesn't simply reside in the mind but transforms the heart. So our faith must not be just in the mere knowledge of Christ, but in the person of Christ Himself through total reliance on Him and His finished work alone for salvation – that is how one is born of God."
