Thesis: Jesus fought the ultimate and most grueling fight against sin and won it, how should draw encouragement from Him to fight ours?
Outline: I do not have an outline; let our text unravel itself before us
Notice the end of verse 2 Jesus is the subject " who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God"
a) Shame was in the cultural & historical fabric of Israel
b) The "shame of the Gospel" Jn 16:2, Mk 8:38, 1 Peter 4:16. Lk 6:22
c) How do we endure in this fight? Consider Jesus! 1. He endured the cross despising shame 2. He endured the hostility of sinners 3. He shed blood fighting against sin 4. He sat down at the right hand of God
The connection: Eph 2:5-7
Conclusion: What is this for? To tell the Hebrews, and us, one simple but amazing truth: "we have not resisted to the point of shedding blood striving against sin"
Remember: God's agenda for us is "to GLORIFY His son, by TRANSFERRING people from the kingdom of darkness into the Kingdom of His Son; and then by TRANSFORMING them into the image of Jesus Christ. That's the definition of Sanctification
Also, Jesus did all this "....for the joy that was set before Him" What was this joy? Is 53:10-12 complemented by John 17:1
