Let us not forget the context: Hebrews Christians in Jerusalem battered on account of their faith, many of whom were at the verge of returning to their old Judaism practices
Sweep Review: Ch 11 & 12:1-5 After providing them with the examples of faith of those who preceded them as recorded in the pages of Scripture, he exhorts them to persevere in faith.
Outline:
1. A mild rebuke 2. An Exhortation 3. An Encouragement
I - A Mild Rebuke: You Have Forgotten 5 and you have forgotten the exhortation which is addressed to you as sons,
The exhortation is addressed to "you" as "sons". This is a quote from Proverbs 3:11-12 NT writers quote the OT in manifold ways The writer mildly rebukes the Hebrews' forgetting (or not bringin to mide), the Scriptures in which they had been trained.
Link to depression:
II - An Exhortation: Do Not Despise Discipline "My Son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor faint when you are reproved by Him:
Two extremes to avoid:
Do not despise discipline:
Do not faint when disciplined: Lit: do not grow weary. Don't lose heart! Do not become discouraged at the Lord's discipline
Being disciplined is not a sign of being loved less, but the contrary
III - An Encouragement: discipline is a sign of God's love 6 for those whom the Lord loves He disciplines, and He scourges every son whom He receives.
The privilege of being the recipient of God's love The joy of being the object of God's delight The source of this privilege; we can't escape the gospel can we? The prospect of being called a child of God 1 Jn 3:1-2
