The church at Ephesus was commended for their deeds, toil, steadfastness, and intolerance of evil men. This church has maintained the proper balance of enduring with what should be put up with and with what should not be. Jesus knew they had done so for the sake of His Name without becoming weary. Yet even with the high commendation they had a critical area in need of correction. They were strongly condemned for having left their first love. What they were very busy doing had become more activity than adoration having let their heart become disengaged from what they were doing. This becomes symptomatic of those who are living the Christian life without being filled with and led by the Spirit. When activities and programs become what is central to the church it has become more of a business or social club than the body of Christ. Believers in the local church are to be living together as worshipers, witnesses, and workers learning and growing together by means of the Word and the Spirit. The correction was clear and concise. Christ called them to remember, repent, and do the deeds they done with that first love.
