Conversion to Christ does not change social or physical distinctions. In the Roman world at the time Peter was writing slavery was not a racial issue. At that time many were living as slaves for various other reasons due to circumstances of the day. Using the familiar analogy Peter under the inspiration of the Spirit of God wrote that by becoming upon becoming a Christian, the believer in Jesus Christ became a slave of Christ regardless of social, racial, or cultural distinctions. Believers are called to live a life that reflects the life of Christ to their world. That life in this world requires submission and suffering at times in doing the will of God in a godless world. In divinely determined ways and for God's purposes He places each believer in in circumstances where He will use them as His witness, worshiper, and worker. Such is the ongoing privilege of His people yet today.
