A Faithful Man Described and Rewarded Increase Mather (1639-1723) Increase Mather was an American Puritan pastor who was president of Harvard College. He is most well-known for his involvement in the infamous Salem Witch Trials, in which he attempted to exert a moderating influence. The following sermon was preached at the funeral of Puritan pastor Michael Wigglesworth on June 24, 1705. Wigglesworth had been Mather's tutor while at Harvard in the early 1650s. Throughout his life, Wigglesworth was tormented by feelings of inadequacy, and was ever-mindful of his sinfulness; this kept his eyes readily fixed on the imputed righteousness of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21). "Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life." Revelation 2:10
